2015, intervention in public space, handrail, scarfs, call center

In the summer of 2015, a handrail was installed on Błonia, the biggest public lawn in Kraków. It was made out of stainless steel, which made it incredibly shiny.

It was situated in the middle between the city’s two big football stadiums. One belongs to KS Cracovia; the other, to Wisła Kraków.

Both teams play in the first league and claim to be the oldest in Poland. Wisła’s fans call themselves dogs; and Cracovia’s fans, Jews. Everybody talks about their holy war. Their hatred towards each other is legendary.

At one end of that new rail, a fan scarf was bound. Since the colors of both Wisła and Cracovia appeared on the scarf, it seemed to belong to both teams at the same time.

The scarf was immediately stolen. On it was written just a telephone number. The thief got curious and called. He was immediately connected with a telephone operator, who amiably asked what the caller wanted.

The thief asked the operator what all this was about. The operator replied that the thief should know, since he was the one calling. The discussion was confusing for both.

Strangely the scarf would always get replaced.

Months passed, and this cycle continued over and over: a scarf with the phone number would get stolen from the handrail, and a confused thief would call a confused telephone operator.

The project is accompanied by a publication.
